Well I managed to wake up at 5:45am to get ready and leave for my 8AM journalism class this morning. Wow, it's definitely hardcore!
Helen Sissons is an amazing woman, seriously. I could listen to her talk all day. She's certainly a woman who has seen much as a journalist.
She takes her work seriously and I admire that in people.
She said to the class "What happens if you miss an interview? .... you miss a story. What happens if you miss a newspaper deadline? ... there's a hole in the paper".
And on that note, she told us that the classroom door will be locked after 15 minutes. And so it was, with a final slam and a few knocks later that faded as they were ignored.
She warned us that if anyone is absent more than twice, then they're out of the paper.
This woman clearly doesn't play games.
Sure, she has a razor sharp wit and a hard-nose. But she also has that classic British sense of humour .
She said "No one loses weight in this class" as she passed around packets of biscuits/cookies at 8AM and demanded sustenance, declaring aloud that breakfast is the most important meal of the day (Bridgette Jones, much?).
She called me a "cheeky monkey" because I took two.
If you couldn't already tell, I'm enthralled by this class. And learning so far is awesome.
